EMDR

It was a sunny day in 1987 when Francine Shapiro, accidentally discovered that eye movement can reduce the intensity of disturbing thoughts..

She was walking around a small lake when she noticed that eye movements appeared to decrease the intensity of the negative emotion associated with her own disturbing thoughts. Her hypothesis was that eye movements had helped in desensitising her distressing memories. She experimented with this on herself and others. The results were consistent.

Shapiro realised that bilateral eye movements, helped to lose some of the negative emotions, negative beliefs and negative thinking attached to the memory of her anxiety provoking incident.

Shapiro also noted, that when she was experiencing a disturbing thought, her eyes were involuntarily moving rapidly. She noticed further that, when she brought her eye movements under voluntary control while thinking a traumatic thought, anxiety was reduced Shapiro developed EMDR therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder. She speculated that traumatic events “upset the excitation/inhibitory balance in the brain, causing a pathological change in the neural elements”.

Shapiro designed a randomised controlled study later that year, investigating the impact of EMDR on people suffering from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In this study, published in 1989 in the Journal of Traumatic Stress, she discovered that “almost without exception, those treated with EMDR successfully resolved their traumatic memory.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is the wonderful outcome of Shapiro’s experience that day. This therapy is now used worldwide and it is being recognised internationally. Ever since, EMDR has been employed as a rapid, effective way to help people deal with traumatic events in their lives.
